Based near the Utah–Colorado state line in Mack, Colorado, the Book Cliffs are right in our backyard and only a few short minutes from some of the best bear hunting Utah has to offer. We offer guide-only or fully furnished black bear hunts with hounds or bait.
Like our mountain lion hunts, these hunts include two guides working from separate trucks to look for your bear each day. Having two guides doubles our chances of finding a quality bear and adds an important safety factor while we are deep in the woods. We prefer to harvest only mature boars.
Bitter Creek Unit
This tag is one of our favorites and a great choice for a quality bear. For hunters with the spring hound tag, we highly recommend hunting early in the season. Our first choice is riding mules into a remote area and letting the dogs work the canyon bottoms.
If horses are not your thing, we can hunt from trucks and side-by-sides while searching the roads for tracks. We recommend this option later in the season when the bears are more active. For hunters with the bait tag, we can set your baits in a remote area using horses and then ride you into the spot each day. These remote areas should improve your odds of finding a mature boar.
Roadless Unit
This hunt is conducted entirely on mules. For the spring hound hunt, we ride in and establish a base camp. Each day, we ride loops with the hounds while looking for bears.
For hunters with the bait tag, we set your baits ahead of time and ride you into the spot each day after the hunt begins. The Roadless Unit is probably your best option for harvesting a truly large bear in Utah.
